What is Yoga and what kind of styles are there?
Yoga is many things to many different people: it can be a type of exercise, a way to reduce and manage
stress, a modality to heal an injury, or a way of life. Many individuals come
to find Yoga because they are looking for a different type of workout—one that
will challenge the body physically, but in a way that is non-injurious. And
Yoga is a wonderful and safe way to exercise, especially if you are recovering
from an injury, or dealing with challenges such as lower back, knee or neck
pain. But Yoga is also a lot more than just a great workout.
Yoga means “union”, and its most
fundamental aim is exactly that: to unite the body, breath, mind and spirit.
Through a series of poses (called “asanas”) and using special breathing
awareness and techniques (called “pranayama”) you will experience both
strengthening and stretching in the muscles, a freeing in the joints, and
relaxation both at the physical and mental levels. We invite you to come and
practice Yoga whatever your reasons, to play and explore, and to be open to all
the benefits that Yoga may bring into your life. There are many different
styles of yoga, some include Hatha, Power, Ashtanga, Kundalini, and Iyengar.
-How often should I take classes?
To
derive maximum benefit and enjoy prolonged health yoga must be practiced on a
regular basis. We recommend at least twice-three times a week or 8 - 10 classes
in a 30 day period as a minimum commitment to begin to see and feel the
sustained revitalization in your body and the ever-present healthy glow in your
cheeks. Building a community within the class is so important and vital to the
growth of the students and the practice, we recommend committing to at least 4
classes per month in advance and progressing towards 8 classes per month.
-Is it ever too late to start practicing
yoga?
It is never too
late to start practicing yoga. No matter your age, height, weight, level of
flexibility, or strength, yoga is for everyone and can be started anytime. It’s
important, though, that you begin in a proper style and level class for you.
Private lessons can also be a great way to start yoga if joining a class is a
bit much at first.
-How much is a class?
As a new student, your first class is always FREE! Otherwise single classes are
$15 per class. We strongly encourage to purchase at
least a series of 4 classes per month. This way you can feel the difference
between just attending one class per month versus attending 4 classes per month
which will make you feel part of the community within the class and at the same
time committing to yourself to stick with your practice and benefiting from all
of the amazing benefits of yoga.
-I’ve
never been to a yoga class. Which one is right for me and how do I start?
You do not need to pre-register to
attend a class. All you need to do is show up to a class about ten to fifteen
minutes prior and fill out some brief paperwork. We recommend those new to Yoga
start their practice by coming to the Beginning Yoga class first or signing up
for a Private Lesson. Wear comfortable clothing, and try to come to class on a
semi-empty stomach. Although we encourage regular students to purchase their
own mat, we have plenty of mats and props for you to use, so the only things
you need to bring is yourself! Check out Class Etiquette!
-Do I have to be flexible to practice yoga?
No, Yoga will help you become
flexible at your own pace. It will also help you strengthen your muscles and
get in better shape. The most important thing is just to start.
-Should
I bring in a bottle of water in class with me?
We practice yoga in a
warm room, breathe in a certain way, and practice particular poses to heat the
body both internally and externally. We do this in order to detoxify as
well as to protect the muscles and joints, since warm muscles are less likely
to incur injury. Drinking water during class cools the body and reverses
the heat we are trying to generate. Unless you are pregnant or have a
medical condition, you should save your water for before and after class.
